Klout.com, the online influence measuring website has seen a lot of chatter lately. For those not familiar with Klout, the site ranks users of many social media services via an algorithm that results in a klout score. Recently Klout updated their algorithm, affecting many users overall scores. Many marketers and social media pundits are frustrated, as this has potentially thrown off many of their programs and attempts to focus on influential users in certain markets.
Here is an example, as viewed from my personal klout score:
My score was not drastically effected. I’ve been dropping for a while, and I should be, as life has been keeping me off of the grid more than usual. Interestingly, in August of this year I was able to skyrocket my score overnight. I say overnight, but that may not be accurate. It was more of a 9 month strategy that culminated in the launch of something quite amazing.
It was the birth of my second son.
Now, technically my profiles did see a lot of action during that time, so in a way it makes sense that I was able to push my klout score. But it didn’t feel right. The topics that I had klout on had nothing to do with babies or children, but were things like music, Indianapolis, and social media. Overall this was a false reading on my influence, in my opinion. As you can see below, things are slightly more accurate today, with Klout rating me as influential about social media, Indianapolis, and obviously, magic.
I was fortunate enough to be able to relate this story to a member of the Klout team in September, and I was given an allusion to the upcoming changes. I think these changes are much needed for Klout to be able to maintain credibility. I also believe that they know that this is their last chance to get it right.
I wish the best for Kout, and I hope to see it grown into the gold standard of online influence it hopes to be.
